A fiction story by Haruki Murakami is illustrated with a photo by
Tim Flach and one by Hellen van Meene. Because the magazine hardly contains photography - it is famous for its cartoons -
the two photos feature quite prominently.

devotes a supplement to photography. This year's "Observatorium" features two photos by Hellen van Meene and a short article
based on an interview. On the frontpage a detail of one of these photos is used to advertise the supplement.

Zeer productieve beeldmakers

Het artikel van Hans den Hartog Jager: 'Luie schilders. De armoede van de hedendaagse fotografie', (NRC Handelsblad, 26 september 2003), getuigt van weinig inzicht in de ontwikkelingen in de hedendaagse fotografie en kennis over de infrastructuur van de fotografie in Nederland en daarbuiten. Fotografie is ten onrechte in een kwaad daglicht gesteld; de teneur van het stuk is in een woord: vilein.

Neem de fotografie van Rineke Dijkstra, Hellen van Meene, Bertien van Manen, Céline van Balen en Charlotte Dumas. Hun werk komt voort uit de documentaire traditie en heeft de status van beeldende kunst. Deze en andere hedendaagse fotografen zijn chroniqueurs van een werkelijkheid, niet van dé werkelijkheid. Van leugen en bedrog is geen sprake. Ook in het werk van Elspeth Diederix, Edwin Zwakman, Frank van der Salm en Marnix Goossens schuilt niets 'bedrieglijks'. Zij construeren een werkelijkheid, komen daar openlijk voor uit en zetten de toon voor een hedendaagse tendens van anekdotische fotografie.

Op 13 mei gingen kunstenaars, galeriehouders en een aantal deskundigen in het gebouw van Arti en Amicitiae met elkaar in debat, georganiseerd door de BBK in samenwerking met de Federatie van Kunstenaarsverenigingen en Arti.

De samenwerking tussen kunstenaars en galeries verloopt echter niet altijd vlekkeloos getuige het conflict dat zich onlangs voordeed tussen een kunstenaar en galerie Paul Andriesse, waarbij de rechter de kunstenaar verplichtte een afkoopsom te betalen, ondanks het feit dat er geen contract was dat haar verbood weg te gaan. Volgens Dikker wordt zakelijk denken van kunstenaars niet altijd gewaardeerd door galeriehouders.
